The traditional food of the Mari people consists mainly of meat, flour-based, and dairy dishes.

The national dish is podkogoli — large dumplings with a variety of fillings such as meat, sweet cottage cheese, berries, mushrooms, or their combinations.

Other notable dishes include:Koman-melna — a layered pancake, alternating with layers of a mixture of grains, eggs, and sour cream.It is also worth mentioning the Kravets, a traditional Mountain Mari meat pie filled with chicken and millet.
